The History of Blackburns

T. Blackburn (Printers) Limited was founded by Thomas Blackburn in 1927 and later incorporated as a private limited company. In 1986 the business became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Continuous Stationery plc. In October 1989 Zenon Moklak and David Peacock acquired the company from the Group, changing the name to Blackburns.

Blackburns specialises in the design, print and finishing of stationery, corporate materials, full-colour marketing and promotional literature and MICR/OCR encoded work, using both traditional litho and digital technologies. In March 1995, Blackburns acquired and successfully integrated the employees, customers and other assets of Embossograph Printers Limited, merging operations into one premises in Bolton's Shiffnall Street.

The company has offered specialist digital print services since 1996, providing an "on demand" full-colour package for short runs. After starting out using an Indigo E-print 1000+ press, subsequent upgrades to our machinery have taken place, with our latest investment being our two HP 7000 four-colour digital machines with one of them enabled to print seven colours. We have also retained one of our HP5000 machines to ensure you get the delivery you want.

Following an April 2001 management buyout, the board of directors was restructured with Karen Anderson as our Finance Director and Christian Peacock as Sales and Marketing Director. We also created a Company Vision document, incorporating a new management philosophy in line with the business' values and corporate aims.

In 1993, Blackburns gained quality assurance accreditation to ISO 9002 standards, with this being upgraded to the latest ISO 9001: (2000) standards in December 2003. We're proud to have been recognized as Investors in People since 2006 and most recently in July 2008 we achieved Chain of Custody certification to both FSC® and PEFC standards.

Since summer 2006, we've occupied newly-refurbished industrial premises in Bolton, currently employing over 40 members of staff.
